SOYLENT GREEN and the Science Fiction ECO-DYSTOPIA That Never Was
In 1966, well known science fiction author Harry Harrison wrote MAKE ROOM MAKE ROOM which was later adapted to the screen as SOYLENT GREEN. Like millions of people, Harrison was duped by Eco-Grifter Paul “The Population Bomb” Erlich who predicted an over populated planet ravaged by the Greenhouse Effect aka Global Warming by the 1980s. In Soylent Green, the year 2022 sees NYC with 40 million people and a year-round heatwave. Real food is scarce, and people are dispensed Soylent wafers supposedly composed of plankton from the sea.
In this episode of ROOM 101, we dismantle Erlich’s claims and Harrison’s not so prophetic tome.
